The Scoop On Collagen | stRIDE Spin &

August 29, 2018

We have all seen a cute little blue jar that is probably propped up next to a colorful smoothie on Instagram. Collagen, specifically Vital Proteins has been popping up everywhere and the rise of the importance of collagen has been taking over the world of wellness. Honestly, what is collagen? Does it live up to the hype it has been given? Let’s get the facts.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the main protein that provides all of the structure to your hair, skin, nails, bones, and all ligaments in your body (so yes, it is a big deal). Collagen is essentially what keeps our body moving and stretching while also making sure our hair, skin, and nails grow and GLOW. Collagen is a protein made up of amino-acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, all of which help our body's connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, as well as gut health,  stay as healthy as possible.

Benefits of collagen

There are a ton of benefits to adding in a dose of collagen into your daily diet, especially because it is so easy to add into your everyday routine. Here are some of the benefits of adding a serving or two of collagen into your daily routine:

Improved skin elasticity (think more glowing and plump skin)

Reduced joint pain

Reduced risk of muscle injury

Strengthened hair and nails

Improved liver

How can we use it?

It is best to ingest collagen rather than just put it on your skin because collagen molecules are too large to fit through the average pore. Most collagen packages sold are odorless and dissolve in hot or cold liquids. This means you can put it in your coffee, water, smoothies, even your favorite salad dressing!

Our favorite collagen drink

2 tbsp of coconut oil

½ scoop of Vega vanilla protein powder

⅓ cup of vanilla sugar-free hemp milk (sometimes substituted for almond milk)

1 tbsp of ground ginger (the fresh tube from Trader Joes)

1 scoop of collagen
