Everything You Need To Know About Turmeric | stRIDE Spin & Fitness

November 15, 2018

WE.LOVE.TURMERIC. It is SO important to have this little piece of heaven incorporated into your daily routine during the colder months - have we made ourselves clear? There are so many benefits of adding turmeric into your daily diet, our favorite it that it is literally natural Ibuprofen (well, kind of). Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and so is turmeric, got it? So if you have a headache or muscle ache (swollen and inflamed body parts that are causing you irritation and discomfort) you take an anti-inflammatory, making more sense here? Turmeric is more than just a boost for aiding body aches, this anti-inflammatory goldmine also helps with bloating and digesting. Imagine a life that instead of reaching for medicine for pain and discomfort, your diet and lifestyle choices prevent it all for you!

So what is it?

Turmeric is a spice that originated in India and Central America, its main ingredient we all know and love is curcumin, which holds all of the health and wellness benefits to turmeric. It has been used for that spicy Indian food taste for years until medical experts also began to discover its many benefits. It has been tested to be able to reduce the risk of arthritis, Alzheimer's, and cancer. It is packed with antioxidants, which can help clean out the liver from packing it with anything not too pretty (bad foods, alcohol, etc.)

How do you use it?

Turmeric is available in most spice sections of the grocery store or health food stores. You can get it in cute spice shakers or in bulk jars, depending on how often and how you plan on using it. A personal favorite is a turmeric latte, it is perfect for the colder months (especially if you are trying to avoid binge drinking coffee all day).

The recipe:

¾ teaspoon of turmeric powder

½ teaspoon of ground ginger

Pinch of black pepper

Pinch of salt

Pinch of honey

1 tsp of honey

1 tsp of almond butter (or nut butter of your choice)

1 ½ cups of water (or almond milk for creamer drink)

1 tsp of vanilla extract

Blend until frothy!

If this does not sound like your cup of tea (or latte) adding turmeric to your roasted vegetables or rice dishes is the perfect way to incorporate it into your diet!
