What is a Pilates Reformer | stRIDE Spin & Fitness

There has been a lot of excitement over pilates reformers recently is the world of health & fitness because of its intense appearance. What is more intense than its appearance? The amazing changes it can make to your body! Reformers are the master of shaping, toning, and working every group of muscles in your body.

So What Is It?

Think of your bed but replace the mattress with a moving cushioned board and your bed frame with a tower with different straps to work your arms and legs and you have a pilates reformer! Joseph Pilates (aka the man who started it all) created these reformers that move based on resistance tension provided by springs. At the top of the tower (think, your bed frame) there are straps used to pull and move the carriage of the reformer (the moving mattress) to further work your legs and arms.

How Do You Use It?

There are tons of different techniques and exercises that can be performed on a reformer. At stRIDE we offer seven different types of pilates classes:

Classical Pilates - Contemporary class is slowed down to focus on the individual muscles bringing new meaning to the term "small movements make a big difference". While the music is still loud and has an upbeat vibe, it is focused more on small, fatiguing movements.

PWR Reformer - High energy, fast-paced, and upbeat rhythmic pilates class. PWR is more intense and dynamic than "Pilates Reformer". PWR Pilates is a great cross training workout that strengthens the core and challenges your muscles.

Arms Abs and Ass Reformer - Slowed down PWR class to focus on the individual muscles bringing new meaning to the term "small movements make a big difference". While the music is still loud and has an upbeat vibe, it is focused more on small, fatiguing movements.

Tone & Trim Upper Body Reformer - PWR pilates-based workout on the reformer machine focusing more on the chest, back, bi's, tri's and shoulders. This class includes a wide variety of exercises done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance.

Core Burnout Reformer - PWR pilates-based workout on the reformer machine focusing mostly on your core muscles. This class includes a wide variety of exercises done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance.

Jump! Pilates Reformer - Rhythmic-pilates, cardio based workout on the reformer machine that works with the jump board. This class includes a wide variety of exercises done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance.

Tower PWR Hour Pilates - PWR pilates-based workout on the reformer that focuses on using the tower portion of the reformer. This dynamic works all areas of the body while challenging yourself to work against gravity.

The Benefits

Reformers offer all benefits of regular pilates classes but can intensify the results. The reformer adds a unique experience to each pilates class offered at the studio! The reformer is also great for adding modifications to each workout to accommodate any injuries or special requests throughout the class, making it a workout for everyone!
